I’d like to think of myself as someone in tune with the times, up to date with current affairs – and though not very techie can still whip up a thing or two with my iPhone, MacBook Pro and PC. My husband thinks that I am a news junkie. He finds it amusing every time I ring him on traffic hazards that was on my Twitter.

Living in Australia for over 12 years now made me realize how detached I can be with anything related to the SPORTS of my Philippine past.
Here they are into FOOTY and CRICKET both of which never excites my easily excitable self. IMHO – Cricket is that insect that somehow causes melancholia when it belts its nocturnal repertoire. Even when you are in the middle of a bright city dwelling. And that sport named after it also causes sadness on my part. It is such a waste of time and SPACE! Again, just in my own humble opinion.
And FOOTY.

Oh gee, where am I gonna start. Everyone has a team. You have to barrack for a team. But I am not everyone. Footy and their drug addled athletes just don’t cut it. I hate their antics in headlines even before I hated the sport. Still, in my own humble opinion.
I grew up with a father who was a health and exercise buff. Brothers who played a lot of sports and are/were good at it. Basketball, Boxing, Weightlifting. They are able and actually have a real love for sports.
My older brother, Jeremy (yes, that's his name-the dude in orange) owns and operates a Gym in my birth city. Family's a sports lot. I mean not really me. I am just a frustrated cheerleader who just cheers in the background sans the pom poms. In the sidelines mostly, whether I understand the games or not ☀☺.

ESPN and CNN are normal shows that blasts all day long in the house. When big events like international BOXING championship, where-in a Filipino was competing - count my family to cheer in front of the TV. I mean really cheer. Complete with matching ring side advices on how to win it. Unsolicited may be, but that just shows how passionate and boisterous this group can be. Sportsmania was and is alive & kicking in Amat/Diez.
Though I am not much of a sports enthusiast I am a big news reader. So from time to time I would see how Pinoy athlete is faring in his career. Pacman’s last bout was such a disappointment. I took the side of the Mexican opponent. Not during the fight but afterwards when the winner was announced. But when Pacman was berated by BoxerBully, trust me to jump to Pacman’s defense.
But oh goodness, gracious me. Not much warning on the current event that just swallowed us whole. This time in BASKETBALL.
Early last week, dawn to be exact. My twitter went crazy with retweets from my sister about Linsanity. Jeremy Lin, NY Knicks # 17. American of Asian descent.
What? Who? How did I miss this? I had to go online and watch, read and actually try to digest what the brouhaha is all about. It this a virus? Everyone seem to be infected. I can feel the viral infection in me. Great, now I, too am infected. Can it be that contagious even for a non-basketball fan like me? I do love the game but gee after moving here and their netball is kinda lame I lost touch with the most popular sports of my nativeland and the Land of the brave.

Going back to this Linsanity – my interest doubled when I learned he was a Harvard graduate. A product of Harvard shooting the hoops. Everything else is minor.
Ivy League! Goodness gracious, Madre Mia, Padre Pio! Asthma puffer please!

Finally I am back in the Basketball Fan bandwagon. It is exciting again. I did not mind to be inflicted with this Linsanity.
But before we knew what hit us: Racial slurs came out of woodworks from the haters and losers.
Take this from a convicted criminal yet to serve time. He twitted that Jeremy Lin is doing what the African-American basketball players has been doing all along. How come he gets all this fanfare and adulation? That tweet by that twit actually drew ire from my self-proclaimed Lin-defender’s heart.
How dare he tweet like that? I admit African-Americans can fly and jump and some white men can’t – BUT WERE THEY EVER IN HARVARD?!
Trying to do my great impersonation of Raj from The Big Bang Theory: "Not belittling them, dude - but HARVARD IS HARVARD."
Get that Mr. Boxerbully? Get yourself straightened out first, do your time then you can talk rubbish. Go attack other boxers verbally, you are good at that anyways. Stick with it cuz when it comes to LINSANITY anything you say will be held against you!

Stereotypes in the US still and always will be that ethnic groups especially ASIANS can’t do Sports well. Sports that require agility and brawn. My race (see I am not racist) are all cute and puny. So, excellence in diving, gymnastics and maybe track and field or two - might be achievable. But not, never Basketball. The last time I heard of Yao Ming he did an ad for a Credit Card Company in time for the Beijing Olympics. Haven’t heard since until lately his name is loosely attached with JLinsanity.
Due to this monster stereotype, Jeremy Lin did not receive any athletic college scholarship and was undrafted for 4 years after Harvard. Four years! What were those vultures of athletic scouts and recruiters thinking? Where were they? Were they blind?

After a short time with Golden State as undrafted free agent they cut him on December 9. Houston Team signed him on Dec 12, but under-utilize him before cutting him on... wait for this:
December 25.
Yep. Christmas day.
He felt rejected and defeated but took solace on a scripture verse:
“And we know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

What a good, good man. ♥♥♥
On December 27, 2011 (My birthday!) Jeremy Lin joined the faltering New York Knicks. It almost became the third NBA team that will cut him too but its star players were sidelined due to injuries and family death. The coach let Lin play longer than usual on February 4, 2012.
Check this out:
Lin, the undrafted, Asian-American guard out of Harvard, was the main catalyst of the streak, pulling a 1980-Playoff
-Magic-Johnson, all but 42 days after getting cut by the Houston Rockets.
Between February 4th and 15th,
"I've never seen anything like this,"
unofficially supplanted "I Love This Game" as the NBA's new tagline.
During the win streak, here are the ridiculous per-game averages Lin posted:

- 9.1 assists

That was just the start of the magic unfolding. The rest shall we say, is history.

The way he plays the game is simply amazing! He's not just any player, he's Michael Jordan in disguise. Tremendous & stupendous. Say anything in the contrary and you are just a hater. And the village people will soon get you.
A few days ago during a Q&A session with students, Kentucky Wildcats coach John Calipari was asked who he would rather coach among the two NBA superstars Kobe Bryant or LeBron James? He smiled and replied, “Jeremy Lin!”
Even Kobe Bryant has this to say: Players don’t usually come out of nowhere. If you can go back and take a look, his skill level was probably there from the beginning, but no one ever noticed.”
As we all remember, and will never forget: JLin outscored Bryant, 38 points to 34 during the New York Knicks-Los Angeles Lakers game on Feb. 10, 2012 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

From Hollywood director Spike Lee: “The guy they overlooked all this time, he became the guy that’s now the international hero. It’s amazing. Everywhere in the world, they are talking about Lin. Something has happened that there’s no explanation for.”
But how can you explain MAGIC?

The Time Magazine Special Asian Edition Cover was chosen in less than a month of JLin making headlines and just over 5 games. Whoa! This special recognition has never been bestowed on other bigger-name sports celebrities like Kobe Bryant, etc. Who has been dazzling the NBA world for longer. You know who’s been on the cover of TIME? The Michael Jordan.

"The things that are real are his vision, which won't change; his speed, which won't change; his knowledge of the game, which won't change. I think it can only get better." - Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni.

Born to and raised in an immigrant Chinese Christian family from Taiwan, Lin grew strong in his faith at the Chinese Church in Christ in Mountain View, California. Even his hard work, discipline and Ivy League education couldn’t fully explain how he has shattered NBA records. “No, but I believe in an all-powerful and all-knowing God who does miracles,” Lin said.
Jeremy Lin explained to media: “I would say it’s a miracle just because anytime something like this happens, a lot of stuff has to be put into place, and a lot of it is out of my control… If you look back at my story, it doesn’t matter where you look, but God’s fingerprints are all over the place, where there’s been a lot of things that had to happen that I just couldn’t control. And you could try to call it coincidence, but at the end of the day there’s 20, 30 things, when you combine them all, that had to happen at the right time for me to be here. So that’s why I call it a miracle.”
Amen to that Brother!
Amen to that Brother!
When ESPN put out a tasteless headline recently, this is what he has to say:
'You have to learn to forgive, and I don't even think that was intentional'
Wow.
'You have to learn to forgive, and I don't even think that was intentional'
Wow.
Tell you what, if someone with a clipboard goes around asking for signatures for JLin's Sainthood, I'd sign.
And here's more:
Jeremy also has a Foundation.
Its goal: dedicated to reaching out to underprivileged individuals and communities to provide financial, educational and spiritual assistance. To make a lasting difference in the lives of others.
Go and do what you are here for Jeremy Lin. Everyone who loves the Lord will not be forsaken. Win or lose you have found your calling. Thank you for the magic and the happily ever afters.
