Pasalubong atbp.

Pasalubong.

I used this word a few times this past month. It is a tagalog word for a gift you give someone after a trip or a journey. We have another word for it in my dialect: 'bahaw', which I should use because it is my local dialect but it also means : "stale day old steamed rice." So I'm using 'Pasalubong' instead. ☺♫


This is how we name our special almond croissant. It is freshly baked by french patisserie in the CBD.  I get Rich this as my pasalubong to him when I get home from work. Rich is kinda picky with his food, does not like sweet stuffs, but he likes this.


It is a flaky, french croissant covered with slices of almonds and has a gooey soft custard in the middle. The custard is just enough not to ooze out when you bite it but pleasantly flavoured, enough for you to remember it is there.

Rich loves it so I made it a point to get him one or two when I have a few minutes to spare between trams. We do not call it by its name: almond croissant, instead we call it pasalubong. I will yell out to announce my arrival at home with "Hon, I got you pasalubong!" He'd smile and say  " you are the best" . He'd then put it back in the paper bag and leave it on the table. He always takes it for lunch the next day.

Once or twice I make a little bite because I couldn't resist the pastry but most of the time I leave it in its perfect shape for my perfect man :-)
